Jeff Koons’ BMW Art Car Doesn’t Suck
BMW has pulled the sheet off the Jeff Koons art car and we have to say we like it. A lot. Our own Tony Borroz, who knows quite a lot about art, mercilessly beat up on Koons when BMW announced he’d be joining the likes of Ernst Fuchs, Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella in designing one of the company’s famed art cars. Borroz called Koons a “talent-bereft hack” and quoted Mark Stevens of The New Republic, who once called Koons “another of those who serve the tacky rich.” Turns out Koons did a very nice job.

Boeing's Latest Mobile Laser Weapon Tracks and Shoots Down Drone
Boeing has just announced it successfully tracked and shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle with a laser weapon. Actually, it shot down five UAVs at various ranges with the trailer-mounted Mobile Active Targeting Resource for Integrated eXperiments (MATRIX). Developed at the request of the Air Force Research Laboratory, MATRIX integrates with standard test-range radar, focusing a single energy beam on moving aerial vehicles and blasting them out of the sky. It's the future of aerial seek and destroy, defending against always-orbiting unmanned craft. Of course, MATRIX isn't Boeing's first foray into laser weapons. Its Airborne Laser system has been under development for years, with the ultimate goal of zapping incoming missiles in midair. Meanwhile, Boeing's Advanced Tactical Laser, another airplane mounted rig, was recorded just last month scoring hits on ground targets with precision accuracy.

BMW Megacity to spawn EV, Sport models, Gran Coupe coming in 2012
Rejoice, Bimmer fans. If you thought the new BMW interest in the world of hybrids and EVs spelt the beginning of the end for your favorite driving machine, think again. Word has surfaced that the company is planning a multitude of different versions of its Megacity EV, including at least one sports car. While chatting with Autocar, Ian Robertson, the head honcho of sales and marketing for the company, said that the Megacity will be made primarily of carbon fiber in order to hit weight targets, and that it will in fact be sold under the BMW banner instead of a newly-minted nameplate.

How To Drive A Bomb-Killing Robot
This is "Scooby Doo," a 60 lb. robot built by the same people that sell you the Roomba vacuum cleaner. It defused 19 explosive devices in Iraq before being "killed" in action. Last week, I learned how to drive it. Not only did I learn to drive it, I even learned how to get the little droid to pick up my iPhone. The PackBot has a number of built-in cameras sending a constant stream of video up to 1000 meters back to a ToughBook-like laptop. The PackBot's operator uses a PS2 controller to control it — it's a lot easier to pick up if you've played Halo before — but the key is to go slow. The left joystick handles forward/back/left/right, and the right joystick directs the main camera. The little guy can move up to 7 mph, but there's a small bit of lag between command and execution, so when you're rolling up on a potential explosive, you want to be careful. Luckily, there is a speed-limit feature that can restrict how fast your ‘bot moves around.
